Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) will conduct local government and councillorship elections on July 20 this year.

Chairman of the commission, Chief Jossy Eze disclosed this at commission headquarters in Abakaliki the state capital during meeting with security agencies, political parties and other stakeholders in the electoral process.

He noted that the tenure of the current Chairmen and councilors in the 13 local government areas of the state and 171 wards will expire on the 31st August this year.

He urged the registered political parties in the state to actively participate in the election l, assuring that all the parties would be given a level playing ground.

Eze said “this commission has conducted three local government elections in the past. So, the last one that was conducted was on the 30th of July, 2022 with the mandate of a two year tenure given to the Chairmen and councilors who were elected then.

“Their tenure will end on the 31st of August this year. So, it is incumbent on us to conduct a new election, another election for those that will take the mantle of leadership in the various local government councils from the 1st of September, 2024 and it is in the exact of that mandate that we are about starting the major activities that will lead to the elections of Chairmen and councilors of local government and we cannot do it alone because for us to succeed, we need all the relevant stakeholders”.

He explained that the election would be held in the 171 political wards of the state.

“Pursuant to the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999,( as amended), the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2001, as amended, and the Ebonyi State Electoral and Related Matters Law, No. 001 of 2017, as amended, and all other powers enabling her in that behalf, the Ebonyi state independent electoral commission Do hereby publish and give notice of local government council elections in Ebonyi state,2024.

“Further take notice that the date of elections ( day of polls) is Saturday, 20th day of July, 2024 throughout Ebonyi state; and that nomination papers are to be delivered at the commission’s headquarters, No. 1 Onwe road Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.

“Also take notice that it is further published in each of the thirteen local government areas and the one hundred and seventy-one electoral wards in Ebonyi state that electoral are to be held”, he stated. ENDS
