Mr. Allen Onyema, the Chairman of Air Peace, has raised concerns about the current implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), stating that it unfairly disadvantages Nigeria.

Speaking at the 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) in Lagos, Onyema acknowledged SAATM’s potential as a step toward liberalizing air transport in Africa. However, he criticized the excessive aviation charges across the continent, which hinder progress.

While many African airlines enjoy easy access to Nigerian cities and airports, Onyema lamented Nigerian carriers’ obstacles when seeking expansion into other African countries. He highlighted disparities in regulations and fees, creating a challenging environment for Nigerian airlines.

Onyema advocated for a level playing field to ensure SAATM’s success, emphasizing collaboration and the removal of biases within the framework.

He stated, “Charging an airline approximately $12,000 in fees by some African airlines is discriminatory. How can we thrive in such conditions? Air Peace experienced this unjust treatment. SAATM can benefit all through collective efforts and addressing its imbalances. Africa’s potential will remain untapped unless Africans take deliberate action.”

Supporting Onyema’s stance, Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Christophe Bazivamo, endorsed a visa-free regime to facilitate seamless interaction, boost tourism, and spur economic growth. Bazivamo cited Rwanda’s success in increasing tourism and traveled by 48 percent in 2023 due to its open-border policy.

Reflecting on her tenure, the outgoing President of NANTA, Mrs. Susan Akporiaye, described her leadership journey as challenging but expressed gratitude for the collective support that helped overcome obstacles.
