The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has decried the outrageous fees hike for new students of Nigerias premier institution, the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

SaharaReporters learnt that this represents between a 453% and 750% hike in the school fees charged for the 2022/23 academic session which ranged from N64, 600 to N69,600.

In a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Victor Igbudu, NANS criticised the University of Ibadan management for using the recently enacted student loans bill as a pretext for the drastic fee hike.

According to NANS, this increase imposes an unreasonable financial burden on students and their families, who are already grappling with economic challenges that diminish their ability to afford basic academic necessities.

The statement read, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as the Voice of Nigerian Students, we vehemently condemn the recent increase in school fees at the University of Ibadan from 64,000 to 412,000 representing 750% increment.

It is unacceptable for the university to utilize the enactment of student loans bill as a means to justify fee increments, especially considering the financial burden it places on students who will ultimately bear the repayment responsibility.

The economic challenges facing our country further exacerbate the plight of students, affecting their access to essential resources such as lecture materials, food, transportation, and research facilities. We urge the University of Ibadan''s management to reconsider this decision and revert to the previous fee structure to alleviate the financial strain on students.

NANS, under the leadership of Comrade Pedro C. Obi, is committed to advocating for the welfare, rights, and interests of Nigerian students, as well as ensuring the advancement and sustainability of quality and affordable education. We emphasize that education is a fundamental right and should be accessible to all, regardless of financial status.
