Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, has commended the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their unwavering efforts at complementing other security agencies towards combating crime and criminality in the state.

Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku stated this when he received the state commandant and other top echelon of the NSCDC in the state in his office.

The Speaker, while acknowledging the risk involved in fighting crime, commended the agency for its effectiveness and assured them of the state House of Assembly’s readiness to work in synergy to make their jobs easy.

He appealed to all residents and indigenes to give necessary information to the agency, as without information, the NSCDC will be unable to carry out its duties, while promising the cooperation of all legislators of the eighth Assembly.

Earlier, the State Commandant, NSCDC, Edo State Command, Gbenga Agun, said he resumed his official position in Edo State about 100 days ago and decided to embark on familiarisation visit to the leadership of the state House of Assembly, explaining that the NSCDC has, as its mandate of enactment by law, the 24-hour protection of critical assets and infrastructure, which include pipelines, refinery, electricity cables, among other critical infrastructure.

Commandant Gbenga Agun also disclosed that the agency through the honourable minister of interior is responsible for licensing private security companies, disaster management and general enforcement of law and order.

A major area of their activity is the newly introduced agro-rangers, which was formed in 2016 in the wake of farmers and herders clash, as well as insurgent attacks on farmers. Leader of the team in Edo State, E. Ojile, said with the resumption of the new Commandant the Agro Rangers are set to commence full operations in the state.

On hand to receive the NSCDC team was the member representing Etsako West 2, Hon. Abdul Ganiyu Akokhia; the clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Audu Omogbai, and immediate staff and political appointees of the Speaker.
