Pained by last weeks loss of a woman to a tragic accident involving a containerised truck in Alapere area of Lagos, the State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee (LASTCOC) has vowed to enforce stricter safety measures.

The incident, which involved a containerised truck and a car has brought to the forefront the critical safety issues plaguing urban traffic management in Lagos, a densely populated metropolis facing rising traffic and safety challenges.

Chairman of LASTCOC, Lukman Shittu, who was deeply moved by the tragedy, extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this incredibly tough time. May Almighty God provide comfort and the strength to bear this immense loss, SHITTU prayed.

He announced the committees concerted effort to bolster safety protocols, emphasising the urgent need for continuous improvement.

According to him, LASTCOC is committed to rigorous compliance and educational outreach to reduce the frequency of such incidents.

He stressed that enhancing safety standards involve intensive sensitisation of truck and cargo operators on the importance of adhering to minimum safety standards and compliance with established traffic rules and regulations.

Shittu said these efforts are critical steps towards mitigating the risks associated with operating large vehicles in heavily congested areas.

LASTCOCs renewed focus on safety training and compliance reflects a proactive approach to tackling the safety challenges posed by heavy-duty vehicles in urban settings, aiming to create a safer road environment for everyone, he said.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have called for quick and effective implementation of these new safety measures.
