In a significant move to address water scarcity, the Standing Committee on Environment and Population Activities (SCOEPA) celebrated World Water Day with the indigenous people of Jenta Mangoro, in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The initiative was aimed at bringing not just attention but actionable solutions to the pressing issue of water scarcity in the region.
According to the National Director of SCOEPA, Adara Okan Beatrice, the event which took place after weeks of meticulous planning and needs assessment laid the groundwork for the impactful outreach after engaging in rigorous dialogue with community leaders to identify the most pressing needs.
While ensuring that the initiative would offer sustainable solutions to the water crisis, the pre-event assessment revealed a community in dire need of reliable access to clean water, a fundamental yet elusive necessity for its residents, Adara revealed.
Speaking at the event, Miss Adara Okan noted that the ceremony marking World Water Day was both a celebration and a call to action while highlighting the collective efforts involved.
“Todays achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished when communities and organizations come together with a common goal. Access to clean water is a basic human right, and it’s at the core of our mission to ensure that this right is upheld,” Adara added.
In addition to providing access to clean water, the SCOEPA’s initiative included educational sessions aimed at empowering the community. The talks focused on securing safe water sources and promoting responsible water usage, addressing crucial topics to ensure the sustainability of the project.
The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive as eyewitnesses shared touching accounts of the day’s events, noting the profound impact of organizations work.
A community youth leader identified as Mr. Emmanuel echoing the sentiments of many expressed a heartfelt gratitude alongside the residents for the efforts made by the initiative.
“For years, we have struggled with accessing clean water. Today marks a new beginning for us,” Mr. Emmanuel remarked.
As the event concluded, SCOEPA and the Jenta Mangoro community both expressed commitment to continue their partnership which was clear. Plans for future projects and ongoing support were discussed, ensuring that the momentum created by this initiative continues to grow, promising a brighter, water-secure future for all involved.
SCOEPA’s World Water Day initiative in Jenta Mangoro is a shining example of how targeted action and community collaboration can address critical environmental and social issues. The organization has laid a foundation not only for water sustainability in the region but also for a future where communities are empowered to tackle the challenges they face.
