Delta Queens weep after losing super six ticket, blame government

Delta Queens FC of Asaba will not be defending their Super Six title this year. This is as a result of the club poor performance in the 2023/24 Nigeria Women’s Professional Football League, which will end this week.

Last year, Delta Queens were crowned champions after beating teams like Rivers Angels, Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens to the title. However, the Asaba-based team has fallen so low this year, grabbing just 16 points from 14 matches.

Some of the players, who spoke to The Guardian, yesterday, blamed the state government for the team’s poor performance.

“It is really sad that we could not qualify for the Super Six to defend our title. We have not been paid salary for three months now. We are in the fourth month, and we have been playing on empty stomach. Majority of our key players will leave for other clubs any time from now. I can’t believe this is happening to Delta Queens FC,” one of the players lamented.

Delta Queens played goalless with FC Robo in Lagos during the week to wave goodbye to the Super Six competition. Their last match is against Edo Queens in Asaba on Wednesday.

However, with the Super Six contest now out of their sight, Delta Queens only hope this season is the FA Cup competition, which has already commenced. The team won their State title last week by beating Delta Babes FC of Warri 5-0 in the final played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
