… as Council creates socialy department units
It was in a trance-like state of great happiness with a sigh of relief recently, in the faces of the two families of fire incidents that occurred last month in Oredo Local Government Area as they received financial and other supports from the Council’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Tom Obaseki.
The Victims, Akinwumi Abiola, and 41-year-old Victor Ajefemue, a School Teacher and also a Disc Jockey, professionally known as DJ Eligible, received financial support of N250,000 each, and clothing support from the council as part of efforts to ameliorate the hardship faced as a result of the fire incidents that razed their property.
Recall that, the Council Chairman, Dr. Obaseki early on in March, pledged to offer assistance when he paid a conciliatory visit to one of the victims’ apartment where he completely lost his valuables including certificate documents, clothes, laptops, Mixer, disc controller, and other items after a suspected defective spark from an electrical high voltage through a wall socket while he and his family had gone to work to a fire that razed the building.
Receiving the financial support on behalf of their families, the Victims, Akinwumi Abiola and Victor Ajefemue thanked the chairman and the “Oredo family” for fulfilling their promises.
They remarked that the financial gesture sparks a new conviction about the Council Chairman’s ability to talk and deliver, adding that they have been rescued, just as they prayed for growth in the Council.
Earlier, the host and Executive Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council, Dr.Tom Obaseki said it is the responsibility of the Council to always ensure they give hope to every citizen of Oredo, especially when they are confronted with incidents that are not directly their makings.
According to Obaseki, “Some days back, while walking through the stairs of the Council compound, I encountered Mrs. Akekunmi and it was very pathetic to hear she just survived a fire incident that razed the whole family assets, and the most disturbing part of it is that she was been confronted with threats from the owner of the property to rebuild it”.
“This is not just about her but also the case of Mr. Victor who also encountered such a fire incident that razed off the whole savings of the family. It was very pathetic when we visited the site.
The Chairman said, “We felt this is too much for our citizens to bear. It was an unfortunate incident. Like I always say, fire and flood are two terrible accidents that once you are confronted by them, it is always difficult to manage.
“They are usually unplanned, so it is our duty as the government to offer support to these humans to put their lives back in order.”
Continuing Dr. Obaseki, averred that, “One of the responsibilities of the government is to ensure that the welfare of the citizens are well protected all the time.
“That is why we in Oredo support each other and lift each other when we have times of challenges.”
He added that the council is dedicated to providing welfare and security for the Oredo citizens, hence the tradition is the belief.
The Chairman also informed that the council has created units in its social departments that are specifically designated to receive any form of support, appealing to the larger residents of Oredo
to support the initiative, saying, “As a government, there’s a limit to what we can do.”
The Permanent Secretary to the Council, Dr. Osaini O. Igbinigie, Heads of Departments, Supervising Councillors, relatives of the victims of fire incidents, and a host of others witnessed the presentation of the financial support.
