The founder of the Afe Babaloa University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola yesterday advocated an amendment to the constitution and other statutes to saddle the military with the enforcement and obedience to law and order in the country.

According to him, the problem in the country today is nothing other than lack of discipline, adding that, it is right from the leadership to the followership.

The legal icon who stated this at the 4th Aare Afe Babalola Distinguished Personality Lecture Series held at ABUAD campus Ado-Ekiti, said if the country must move forward, the law should be amended in such a way to saddle the military discipline and obedience of citizens.

“Upon reading the topic of the Lecture, a question raced to my mind. The question was: How can there be security, leadership and peace when there is no order? For me, the Military today is the most disciplined institution in the country, Babalola said.

“The constitutional responsibility of the military is to ensure and maintain the territorial integrity of a state, while that of the Police is to ensure obedience to law and order.

“If we want the country to move forward, our law should be amended in such a way to saddle the military with the enforcement and obedience to law and order in this country.

In his keynote lecture, titled: Insecurity, Leadership and Peace Building in Nigeria: Dynamic and Challenges, the Commandant, Nigeria Defence Academy, Major General John Ochai, said that to address insecurity in the country required the input of the whole of the country, including the military, the government, the civil society groups, the educational institutions, all security agencies and individuals citizens.

“It is the responsibility of citizens to pass information to the security agencies. It is also the responsibility of citizens to focus on national development.

“We must keep our youths from crime and what is inimical to the development of our society. There some strategy initiative from the current government that is addressing insecurity. For instance the police had received more funding and there is an ongoing reform of the police and the security sector.

“There are other legal issues that is being raised such as the state police that is before the National Assembly. When the law is passed, the subnational will play more roles in the security sector.”

In his address at the event, the Chairman of the occasion and the Archbishop of Catholic Church of Ekiti Diocese, Bishop Felix Ajakaiye said the country must all unite to ensure order, orderliness and discipline, saying that is the only and the surest way forward.
