In a significant development for Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has revealed ambitious plans by the state government to revitalize the long-dormant Adogo Airstrip, transforming it into an international cargo airport. This announcement comes after nearly two decades of the airstrip lying dormant, symbolising a new era of economic growth and infrastructural development for the region.
Governor Ododo met with the management of the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) led by the Managing Director, David Wang at the Government House in Lokoja, where he disclosed this plan.
The proposed Kogi State Cargo Airport which will be executed on a Public-Private Partnership model by the Kogi State Government and the CCECC is to begin with a feasibility study and consultation with stakeholders in a few weeks from now after which a project implementation committee will be constituted to see to the completion of the project.
Speaking on the significance of this initiative to the CCECC team, Governor Ododo emphasized the pivotal role that the international cargo airport will play in facilitating the movement of goods and services, thereby attracting investment and stimulating economic activity. Moreover, the airport’s strategic location is poised to make it a hub for cargo operations, serving as a gateway for both domestic and international trade.
The Governor expressed optimism about the strategic significance of completing the proposed cargo airport in Adogo. He believes it will advance his administration’s economic developmental agenda by connecting Kogi State to key economic hubs through an intermodal transportation system. This system includes the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and the Warri-Itakpe-Abuja rail line, which will be fully completed.
While responding to the Governor, the Managing Director of CCECC, David Wang, assured him of the company’s commitment to delivering on the proposed project. He emphasised that they would commence work as soon as the government completes the feasibility study, along with other required assessments and consultations.
