Among the many firings since the NFL regular season ended, Brian Flores and David Culley were just two, but how many black head coaches are there in the NFL now both have been relieved from their duties?

Its not uncommon for NFL teams who have failed to reach the post-season to fire their head coach.

Two such teams in that situation in the 2021/22 campaign were the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans.

Both franchises were led by black head coaches “ Brian Flores (main picture) (three seasons) and David Culley (below) (one season), respectively.

Their firings this week have reduced the number of black head coaches in the NFL.

But how many black coaches are currently in position in the NFL?

For Flores, a three-year stint in Miami came to an end after a 9-8 season, in which they finished third in the AFC East.

Their record was not too dissimilar from the 10-7 New England Patriots “ who advanced to the post-season.

Under Flores, the Dolphins failed to advance to the post-season in any of his three terms in charge “ indeed they havent done so since 2016.

As for Culley “ he was let go after a one-and-done year with the Texans.

A long-time assistant coach, Culley finally got his head coach break with the Texans in 2021.

Given the off-field situation at the franchise, it was unlikely Culley would have been able to get the Texans into the post-season.

Indeed, despite winning his first game, the Texans recorded a 4-13 season in the NFC South “ enough for third place.

Flores was fired on January 10th, 2022, with Culley losing his position on January 13th.

Flores and Culley made up a majority of black head coaches in the NFL.

Prior to their dismissals, there were three black head coaches within the NFL.

That number has now fallen to one.

The only black head coach currently in the NFL is long-time Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

Tomlin has been in post since 2007 “ claiming success in Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.

The Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Florida.

Tomlin remains to this day the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl.

However, he may not remain the only black head coach in the NFL.

There are currently vacancies at the following teams “ as of 12pm ET on January 14th.
