Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has attributed Nigerias dominant 3-0 win over Benin Republic in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier to the quality of the players rather than the tactical system used, Soccernet.ng reports.

In a commanding performance at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria began their AFCON qualifying campaign in style.

Eguavoen, leading the team in his fourth stint as coach, opted for a 3-4-3 formation, and the Super Eagles did not disappoint.

Ademola Lookman struck twice, while Victor Osimhen, coming off the bench, added the third to seal a comfortable victory over the Benin Cheetahs.

Despite the successful result, Eguavoen emphasised that the team’s quality of players was the decisive factor, not necessarily the tactics employed.

Speaking to reporters after the match, he said: “The formation is only information. We have players of quality, and we can decide to play with any system.”

The 59-year-old coach further explained that he had full confidence in the abilities of the Super Eagles squad, no matter the tactical approach.

“There is something we discussed, and I slept over it, and I know that with the calibre of players we have, we can decide to play any formation and be successful.”

Eguavoen acknowledged the criticism that has surrounded the team but commended his players for rising to the occasion.

“The players are always there, and when much is expected by Nigerians, that is when you see them performing.”

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will now shift their focus to their next AFCON qualifier against Rwandas Amavubi on Tuesday at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
