Charlie McNeill celebrates scoring in third successive game

Charlie McNeill is beginning to find form in his second season in Manchester United’s academy.

United signed McNeill from Manchester City a year ago, and the young striker had a prolific first season.

McNeill scored 25 goals for United’s under-18 side, 24 in the league in 22 matches, and one in the FA Youth Cup.

United had seen enough of McNeill at under-18s level, and have challenged him to step up to the under-23s.

This step up has naturally been more demanding on the 18-year-old, and he is beginning to excel.

McNeill actually scored in the first under-23 game of the season as United drew with Leicester, and almost netted a late winner.

He followed that up with a goal in the EFL Trophy against Lincoln, also in August, and then went on a spell without scoring between August and November.

This saw McNeill go seven under-23 games without a goal – although very notably, one one was a start.

McNeill came back into the starting line-up against Leeds early in the month and was helped by Amad.

After great work from the Ivorian, McNeill scored a terrific goal as he chipped the onrushing goalkeeper.

The teenager followed this up with a goal in the under-23 draw with Derby at the weekend, scoring an equaliser after a Hannibal assist.

McNeill continued his streak with a goal in Manchester United’s under-19s victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday.

McNeill had previously started two Youth League games and failed to score, and this was a great time to get off the mark.

With extra confidence flowing, McNeill is back enjoying his football and scoring goals.

This season McNeill now has five goals in all competitions, which has him level with Anthony Elanga and Shola Shoretire.

The youngster recently was involved in first team training, getting the chance to work alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

He will fancy his chances of exceeding double figures this season, and will be looking to continue his streak beyond scoring three in a row.
