The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep regret over the tragic death of Edward Borketey Sackey, a final-year student at OReilly Senior High School in Accra.
In press release, the GES extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
According to the statement released on September 4, 2024, the Director-General of the GES led a team to visit both the school and the bereaved family to offer support. The GES is collaborating closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that all circumstances surrounding the incident are thoroughly investigated.
The Service also confirmed that the situation on the school campus has been stabilized and that measures are being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The GES urged the public to refrain from making speculative statements and to allow the investigative processes to take their course. The Service pledged to keep the public informed as more details emerge.
This response comes after a fatal altercation at OReilly Senior High School on Monday, September 2, 2024, in which Edward Borketey Sackey, an 18-year-old student, was stabbed to death by a fellow student. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement between Edward and another student from the Visual Arts Department, identified as Godwin, over a trivial matter.
Despite Edwards attempts to seek help, the confrontation escalated, leading to his death. The incident has sent shockwaves through the school community and beyond, prompting calls for a comprehensive review of safety protocols in schools.
As investigations continue, the GES has stated its commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies inthe future.
