Jim Acosta, the chief domestic correspondent for CNN, announced on the air on January 28, 2025, that hes voluntarily leaving the iconic network after almost two decades. Below, we have info on his age, career details, and more amid the news that hes moving on.
Jim Acosta is a longtime journalist who was raised in Northern Virginia. Born Abilio James Acosta, he received a bachelors degree in mass communications from James Madison University, with a minor in political science. He began his career in radio, and worked as a CBS News correspondent based in Atlanta and New York.
Acosta joined the team at CNN back in 2007. His last role at the network was chief domestic correspondent and weekend anchor, which he took on in 2021. Acosta published a book in 2019 called The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America. He memorably traded barbs with President Donald Trump during an on-air press conference in 2018. You are a rude terrible person, you shouldnt be working for CNN, Trump told the journalist while standing at the podium.
Acosta was born April 17, 1971. He is currently 53 years old.
The New York Post correctly predicted on January 27, 2025, that the anchor would leave CNN after he was pulled from his 10 a.m. timeslot on the network and asked to fill a midnight slot, instead. On the air on January 28, Acosta confirmed the rumor, and his unwillingness to take the graveyard shift. You may have seen some reports about me and this show and after giving all of this some careful consideration, and weighing an alternative timeslot CNN offered me, I have decided to move on, he said.
Per the New York Post, CNN offered their gratitude in a formal statement following Acostas announcement. Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a track record of standing up to authority, for the first amendment and for our journalistic freedoms, read the statement. We want to thank him for the dedication and commitment hes brought to his reporting and wish him the very best in the future.
Its not clear where Acosta may land following his departure from the iconic network. A source told Variety for a January 28 report that he may launch his own digital platform to feature his own interviews and reporting. Per Fox News, Acosta offered some stern words that indicated that whatever he does next, he would not back down from his fierce advocacy for freedom of the press. I have always believed its the job of the press to hold power to account, he said in his on-air announcement. I have always tried to do that here at CNN. I plan on doing all of that in the future. One final message “ dont give into the lies. Dont give into the fear. Hold onto the truth. And to hope, even if you have to get out your phone, record that message. I will not give into the lies. I will not give into the fear. Post it on your social media, so people can hear from you, too. Until then, I want to thank all of you for tuning in. It has been an honor to be welcomed into your home for all of these years.
He stressed the importance of the freedom of the press earlier this month, as well. Journalists exist to seek the truth, to tell peoples stories, to lift up voices that may not be heard otherwise, to shine a light on injustice and to hold the powerful accountable, he said during a CNN segment on January 16, ahead of Trumps inauguration.
