IKEA Birmingham store evacuated live - police at scene

The IKEA store in Wednesbury was evacuated on Tuesday (March 11) afternoon after concerns were raised about a 'suspicuous item'.

IKEA said it cleared the shop to allow it to 'investigate a safety concern'.

And now West Midlands Police has provided a bit more detail to say the evacuaton was down to a suspicious item.

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: "We were called to IKEA in Wednesbury at around 1.52pm following a report of a suspicious item.

"The store was evacuated while the building was searched and has since re-opened."

BirminghamLive has asked the police to confirm what the item was.

IKEA statement - store evacuated due to ''safety concern''

The Swedish flat-packed furniture chain has provided a statement following the evacuation of its Wednesbury store on Tuesday (March 11) afternoon.

It has said the store was cleared of customers and staff at 2.15pm due to a 'safety concern'.

It was not willing to elaborate on what the concern was or the nature of it.

An IKEA spokesman said: "The safety of our customers and co-workers is always the highest priority for IKEA.

"We can confirm that all customers and co-workers exited our Birmingham store at 14:15 today to allow us to investigate a safety concern.

"The store reopened at 15:15. We apologise for the inconvenience caused."

Store reopens and customers allowed back inside

The IKEA shop in Wednesbury has been reopened to the public, a little over an hour after the evacuation at around 2.15pm.

Customers have been allowed back inside and those that had to leave their food are being cooked fresh meals!

Those customers that hung around to see if the shop would reopened queued up to go back inside.

BirminghamLive has asked both IKEA and the police for a comment.
