The House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Akali, over the frequent derailments of trains.

The House also directed the House Committee on Transportation to investigate the derailments.

The decision to summon the minister followed a motion moved by Umar Ajilo on Tuesday during plenary.

In the motion, Mr Ajilo said the frequency of derailments on the Abuja-Kaduna line has become worrisome.

He stated that the Abuja-Kaduna train derailed on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, and had earlier derailed in May 2024.

The recent trend of recurring derailments of the Abuja-Kaduna train services is concerning; a situation which calls for our collective attention, Mr Ajilo said.

The House, therefore, resolved that the minister and other stakeholders must explain to Nigerians the reasons behind the repeated derailments and the measures taken to prevent further occurrences of these unfortunate incidents.

Additionally, the House mandated its Committee on Land Transportation to conduct an investigation within four weeks.
